Touch-Based Unlock |
|
What is it:
- In the end design, we're left with a track and eight numbers. In order to unlock the phone the user must move along the track with a singular swipe action, and move over the numbers in a user-specified order to unlock. The Twist: - While moving along the track from number to number, some numbers will become un-reachable (See picture 3) based upon the current position of the user. - Numbers can be repeated as long as there is at least one other valid number in-between (For example, 2-3-2 is valid). |
The Design Goals:
- Fast to use - Security - Avoid Accidental Unlocking - One Handed - Serious/Clean Overall Theme The Look and Feel: - One of the most common critiques is that this design has no "flavor", and the same could be said about the next design. I feel that it's important to state that this is on purpose. I feel that noval and fun designs (although originally enjoyable), almost always end up behind a useful design. |
Why I made the choices I made:
The Shape: - I found that the shape was important mostly to define the style of the unlock screen visually, and the style and pattern of unlock codes that were valid. Visual Tracks: - Although the tracks don't look perfect in this release, the idea was that they were to show the user what they could do at any stage. It was important to me that the user was never confused on which numbers were available from any set position. Failure Indication: - In this release I decided to not show the user when they had made an "incorrect pattern", the pattern will never reset. This said, the code can still be input after a wrong input has been used, allowing the User to fail, and correct themselves without lifting a finger. |

Why I made the choices I made:
The Empty Screen: - Although my design could have found a "real-life analogy" that would help users better understand what was happening, I felt that it took away from the experiance for a user down the road. The pattern-set screen that would be found in the phones setting can do the job of providing a guide well enough. Now that we have an empty canvas, the user can do whatever they personally desire, hitting a broad audience. A Tap On Each Twist: - My main goal for this feature was to avoid any accidental unlocking, and although it makes the entire process longer to do. It makes each tap and twist more meaningful together. |
