Proxemic Display |
|
What is it:
- The Event Display is a public advertising system that informs users of events that might be near to their location in hopes of attracting them to something that would have otherwise been missed. How does it work: - By abusing the knowledge of the users distance from the display, we're able to make the system both informative and attractive at different points in the interaction cycle. As the user starts from a far distance, the display focuses on gaining the attention of the user and drawing them closer. If the user decides they have interest, they can extra information by approaching the display. |
The Context Of Use:
Where: - Public Streets and Open Areas (Ex: University of Calgary Campus) Why: - Catch the attention of people who would have otherwise missed the events displayed. Interaction: - A user is slightly interested in one of the large events being displayed. - As they move closer, the display shows all events in the near area. - If needed, the user can fully approach the screen for directions and more details. |
Design Decisions:
- By using simplistic and easy to identify symbols, we are able to give the display a specific art style that doesn't worry about image clashing from different advertisements. - By using the same images from start to end, a user interacting with the system is able to keep track of an event that might interest them from start to finish, allowing the transitions to be less jarring. - With the Context of Use being in public areas, I've avoided the addition of gestures, people will be constantly passing the display with waving limbs, it's important to avoid the frustrations of accidental use from a bystander. |
